Hidden Beauty: Underground Discovery Stories from Arizona and Mexico
Les Presmyk

Over the last 50 years, I have been involved in a number of mining projects related to the recovery of mineral specimens, thus being able to bring my experience as a mining engineer back to the hobby that was the start of my career. I have explored several mines in the Bisbee area, along with the Ojuela mine at Mapimi and the Erupcion mine at Los Lamentos. Mike New, a longtime friend and associate who just recently passed away, was the reason I was at Mapimi and Los Lamentos. I did mapping, along with Tony Potucek, and other engineering work at the San Francisco mine in Sonora, Mexico during the last major mining project there, headed up by Ed Swoboda and Wayne Thompson. The Red Cloud mine was another project Wayne and I worked on together, where I performed all of the duties of mine manager, permitting engineer, and anything else required to make the mine operate, all with the significant help of Graham Sutton. Finally, over the years, Bisbee has been a consistent area of interest that has included a few forays underground, all of which took place over 20 years ago. (Photo above by Jeff Jeff Scovil.)
